You know you probably wont read a lick of this its unlikely anyone will, and personaly I dont believe myself an Artist but I feel that this little journal deserves an answer from every single person that see's it. Seriously, I havent even read past your reply to Wereblood when I wrote this up Im half certain a good number of people are making fools of themselves at their expense but many of them are going to be most certainly right that you have your head WAY to far up your ass. Do not give my our Livejournal BULL Response, your going to give everyone A SERIOUS response eventualy and Please make it a more well thought out response than a blurb of nonsense.

But for now lets get down to explaining to you in whats likely a mass of opinions but I might be getting my ego a bit inflated now too. PLEASE READ Before you off and tell me im a huge idiot as all of this information is freely available and can be checked by simply using a library if your none to trusting to electronic sources.

First off the Deffinition of ARTIST.

Artist
–noun
1. a person who produces works in any of the arts that are primarily subject to aesthetic criteria. (Starting off here, producing works that are subject to aesthetic criteria can easily be subject to a person drawing a line with a blue pencil is most certainly and artist.)
2. a person who practices one of the fine arts, esp. a painter or sculptor. (Alright im not going to rant about this one just yet because it might take a good ammount of space. Key word however PRACTICES, by deffinition practicing an art form doesnt mean your a professional, its a habit at the very least.)
3. a person whose trade or profession requires a knowledge of design, drawing, painting, etc.: a commercial artist. (- Now, this sounds an afull like anyone who's made a single dollar off of a drawing is an ARTIST)
4. a person who works in one of the performing arts, as an actor, musician, or singer; a public performer: a mime artist; an artist of the dance. (- As Previously stated by others YOU CAN learn to do any of this without any proffessional teacher or any at all and still do well in each field by using personal experiance alone.)
5. a person whose work exhibits exceptional skill. (- If you plan on using this to defend your-explination then please DEFINE, "WHO" exactly has the right to say who's work is good and who's is not, by this virtue alone being an Artist is by virtue of a single person thinking you are.)
6. a person who is expert at trickery or deceit: He's an artist with cards. (Can you shuffle a deck of cards? Any good at magic tricks? Congratulations your an Artist.)
7. Obsolete. an artisan. (-Obsolete)

—Synonyms 1. Artist, artisan are persons having superior skill or ability, or who are capable of producing superior work. An artist is a person engaged in some type of fine art. An artisan is engaged in a craft or applied art. (-This applys mainly to ARTISAN who is now in common knowledge a professional at producing or preforming an Art form, now I might be able to slide with Artisans being a limited group of learned people an Artist is most certainly not someone who has a slip of paper decreeing them an artist.)

Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006.

American Heritage Dictionary
artist
n.

1. One, such as a painter, sculptor, or writer, who is able by virtue of imagination and talent or skill to create works of aesthetic value, especially in the fine arts. (-anyone selling there art for cash? Hell even trading a piece for someone elses Art.)
2. A person whose work shows exceptional creative ability or skill: "You are an artist in the kitchen." (-ZOMG a compliment, I cant believe that someone who can cook good can be an "Artist" Anyone can cook well by simple trial and error again you never have to have a slip of paper decreeing you a cook try every one of those cooks there and how many had schooling or just worked there way up through experiance in the field?)
3. One, such as an actor or singer, who works in the performing arts. (-YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GOTO SCHOOL TO BE SUCCESSFULL HERE, Seriously how many popular bands labeled as Artists world wide )
4. One who is adept at an activity, especially one involving trickery or deceit: a con artist. (-ZOMG SUCCESSFULY STEALING)

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

artist
1581, "one who cultivates one of the fine arts," Originally used especially of the arts presided over by the Muses (history, poetry, comedy, tragedy, music, dancing, astronomy), but also used 17c. for "one skilled in any art or craft" (including professors, surgeons, craftsmen, cooks). Now especially of "one who practices the arts of design or visual arts" (a sense first attested 1747). (Alright before you point this one out who has the right to tell someone their skilled or not this is a matter of opinion, hell lets use a point of reference here Michelangelo Buonarotti , now I could probably sit here and say how much I hate his work, how ugly it looks and why the hell anyone would care to look at any of his Sculptures, I GAURENTEE YOU someone has pleasured themselves to "David" since 1504.)

Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2001 Douglas Harper

artist

-noun
a person whose creative work shows sensitivity and imagination (Ok seriously find a piece on this particular website and tell me it has no imagination or sensitivity, and you seriously need to be slaped in the face if it had no imagination behind it, it would merely be a copy of someone elses work, if it had no sensitivity behind it then why would they share the piece?)

now lets go with your little checks for being an Artist

1) Just because one draw in blue pencil does not make one an artist. You are not making lithographs, photo edits for plate burning, or using photography on a sketch.

Ok, tell me exactly WHY if I drew a blue face with a blue pencil why its not art? Seriously give me the exact reason its not art, if its because you think its not art you've pissed off ALOT of people for no good reason.

2) Just because one illustrates genitalia and attract a following of very poor taste does not make one an artist. These people are beating off to your art and could seriously care less about the illustrator. This, also, is the differance between being artistic and being an artist.

Ok the point here Pornography, sometimes shortened to porn, is, in its broadest state, the explicit representation of the human body or sexual activity with the goal of sexual arousal and/or sexual relief. It is similar to erotica, which is the use of sexually-arousing imagery for mainly artistic purposes. In general, "erotica" refers to portrayals of sexually arousing material that hold or aspire to artistic or historical merit, whereas "pornography" connotes the prurient depiction of sexual acts, with little or no artistic value. The line between the two is often highly subjective. In practice, pornography can be defined merely as erotica that certain people perceive as "obscene." The definition of what one considers obscene can differ between persons, cultures and eras. This leaves legal actions by those who oppose pornography open to wide interpretation.

Please kindly point out everything that is Pornography and everything that is Erotica now.

3) Just because people enjoy your artwork does not make you an artist. People enjoy the smell of flowes, the look of a sky in particular light, and the shade of a tree on a hot day.

So, if what if no one enjoyed any artwork? Show me an Artist that not a single soul enjoy's its an obvious factor that A PERSON OR A GROUP OF PERSONS MUST Enjoy any artform you do to be an Artist.

4) Your mother putting crappy art on the refrigerator and giving you a big head about how tallented you are doesnt qualify as Artistic approval. No matter how good one thinks one is due to the inept and unqualified apraisers "OMG That is so $&@* amazing!" commentary, remember, artists actualy know what to comment on and have likely critiqued themselves openly already.

Kindly point me to the qualified profesional critiquers now, so we can kindly tell them that their big heads about how tallented they are about pointing out flaws in an otherwise pleasing piece of work, need to be pulled out of their back-sides so they may breathe.

Aside you've proven this yourself, the first comment on this journal points it out. You couldn't take the first bad critisim that poped up, really you might of saved a bit of face if you had thought your answer out to responding to it maybe even gotten your point across. Not a soul in the world deserves to be able to label anyones work as "Good" or "Bad" as it would be a matter of a single persons OPPINION on that work.

"5) If one takes offense to criticisim of any kind, one is most definatly NOT an artist. Criticisim, as any artist knows, is something that comes with the territory. You are visualy showing your work FOR others attentions and witness. This is not optional or one would not BE an Artist. It is to be expected that there are others better then you in art and are to be tolorated so one can expand and grow from the experiences of their own findings and learnings. No great Artist ever forged on this earth ever did it alone."

Ok Seriously, no human alive will take no offense to any critisim its there, even if its not showing or noticed by the offended person there will always be a small part of anyone hating the person that pointed out a bad point. Though I'd find it hard to not agree that yes your Work must be shared with others it does not necissarly have to be visual you've more than one sense you know. Also by a Logical chaining of the end there is a matter opinion logicaly by the fact that someone must be better than the other there must be a singular person at the top who is THE BEST, I couldn't possibly point you to this person as it is truely a matter of opinion there. Kindly point yourself to the first artist and tell me he or she was not great who the hell taught him or her? Someone must of done it first and therefore had to of done it alone 'Speaking by your rules an Artist can not be trained by anyone other than an Artist'

6) If you did not go to school for art, learn about the history and techniques of art, and actualy/fully understand the uses of those teachings, you are not an Artist. Much like the example in the forementioned, one can not be a Lawyer without the proper learning tools, education, and skill involved to pass the many thousands of tests to make sure one is ready to advance.

Ok, heres where you have to kindly pull your inflated head out of your ass. Kindly point me to a teacher of "Art" who's views of what good art is and what bad art is is not largely based on a comparison to their own works? If your basing it on you must conform to what this person believes is art then there would never be anything imaginitive again Just because someone has learned these things either does not mean that they are used at all in the creation of their "Art" Maybe they've got their own technique that had nothing to do with any elder technique and whatnot.

7) Finaly, and most importantly, unless one is certified as an Artist, you are not an Artist, merely artistic.

By the definition of ARTIST you do not need to be a "CERTIFIED ARTIST" to be an Artist, certainly you must be a "CERTIFIED ARTIST" to be A Certified artist. I'd like to see your Chefs' Certified Artist slip, your Techno Musician Artist slip, Prove to me that Techno spawned in Canada as well Point me to the historical reference here.

Now, if I get this magical certificate of holy IM AN ARTIST batman do I get to say anyone who points to Livejournal as a defence mechanism to critisism cannot be an Artist?
Hell, forgive me for saying Livejournal would deffinitly be the place for ranting without fear of another person shooting you down for it. IT IS CERTAINLY not a way to give any sort of critisism that is felt required to give to a person who anyone believes maybe wrong or right.

If you did not want anyone flaming you over this, telling you your wrong...especialy if you expected a flock of people to come in and say how incredibly intellegent those guidelines on who is and who isn't an Artist are you flat out shouldn't of said a single word at all.

I eagerly await your response, personaly I believe everyone who has read this deserves an equal response to every single point that shows a flaw in these rules frankly I'm very open to critisism now Critisize me!

(taken from my post here [link] ) an exact copy .-. including everything I may have miss-spelled, please comment on this person's little journal. Thanks to Muzz for pointing it out to me with a journal of her own xP
